Productivity of wheat as influenced by seeding rate and split application of nitrogen at Parwanipur, Bara

Abstract

Field experiments were conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Parwanipur, Bara, Nepal during winter seasons of 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 to assess the effect of seed rate and time of nitrogen application on wheat. The experiment consisted of three levels of seed rate (100, 120 and 140 kg ha-1) and three levels of split application of nitrogen viz. 2 splits ( ½ dose of N at basal + ½ at CRI stage), 3 splits (1/3 dose of N at basal + 1/3 N at CRI stage + 1/3 at stem elongation stage) and 4 splits (¼ dose of N at basal + ¼ at CRI (crown root initiation) stage + ¼ at stem elongation stage + ¼ at flowering stage) and was laid out in factorial RCBD with three replications. Seed rate and time of nitrogen application had non-significant effect on plant height, sterility percentage and 1000-grain weight. Seed rate of 120 and 140 kg/ha produced significantly highest number of effective tiller/m2 and grain/spike. Likewise, highest grain yield (3282 kg/ha) was observed with the seed rate of 120 kg/ha which was also significantly at par with 140 kg/ha. Straw yield (4610 kg/ha) was highest with the seed rate of 120 kg/ha. Three and four splits of nitrogen produced higher number of effective tiller/m2. Two and three splits of nitrogen produced higher number of spikelet/spike, weight of grain/spike and straw yield. Spike length (18.1 cm), grain/spike (69.94) and grain yield (3323 kg/ha) were significantly higher with three splits of nitrogen.
