Abstract

Syzygium cumini is the scientific name for the Java plum, a kind of medicinal plant. The plant can be found all over the plains of India, all the way to its southernmost point. This plant contains phenolic compounds, tannins, glucoside, myrecetin, ellagic acid, anthocyanins, kaemferol, and isoquercetin among other phytochemicals. It shows various pharmacological activities like Anti- inflammatory activity, Anti- Oxidant activity, Anti-microbial activity, Hepatoprotective activity and Anti Ulcer/colitis activities etc. In this research work, Total Phenolic Content (TPC) and Total Tannin Content( TTC) are determined by using various methods through Extraction, Purification and Biotransformation process. In Soxhlet Extraction process, TPC and TTC concentrations were found to be 29.5µg/ml and 23.0µg/ml respectively. In Purification process TPC and TTC concentrations were found to be 32.0µg/ml and 24.5µg/ml. In Biotransformation process, TPC was enhanced compared to TTC concentration and TPC was found to be 42.5µg/ml at 120 hrs.
