Rearing of the Mussels (freshwater bivalves) for Commercial Pearl.

Abstract


The concretion consisted of the material of molluscan shell and highly valued gemstone is the pearl. The pearl is perfectly round, hard and glistening objects synthesized by the mantle of the oyster, the molluscan animal. In a minute and crystalline form, the calcium carbonate has deposited by soft tissue of mantle in the concentric layers. Pearl mussel, Margaritifera margaritifera (L) is one of fresh water molluscan animals used for the commercial pearl culture. This species is considered to be a long-lived, significantly threatened occurring in fresh water of cool and running quality. Presently, over 95% of pearls in a market would be cultured pearls. The pearl, the final product of pearl culture is with light weight and non-perishable. Commercial pearl culture is compatible occupation. Excluding some exceptions (for example process of grafting), commercial pearl culture is simple and feasible. Commercial pearl culture is not going to harm the environment (if it is managed properly).
