Abstract

Numerous herbal medicines have been used in various medical systems to treat and control a variety of ailments. Myristica fragrans is a perennial spice species that belongs to the Myristicaceae family. It has been cultivated all throughout the world and is used to flavor food, make essential oils, and in traditional remedies. Mostly terpenes and phenyl propenes are found in nutmeg and it is a critical component in a wide variety of commercial processes, from food to cosmetics and possesses a variety of pharmacological properties, including hepatoprotective activity, antioxidant activity, memory enhancing activity, cytotoxicity, aphrodisiac activity, anti-diabetic activity, anti-depressant activity, hypolipidemic and hypocholesterolemic effect, antimicrobial activity, antibacterial activity, anti- inflammatory activity, anti-carcinogenic activity and pesticidal activity. Pharmaceutical compounds and by-products are also crucial due to their many characteristics, and they continue to find new uses and applications. This article presents comprehensive analyzed information of Myristica fragrans in terms of its phytochemistry and different pharmacological effects.
