Two-Line Method for Hybrid Rice Breeding

Bhagya Shree

Abstract

Rice (Oryza sativa) is staple food for almost half of the population in the world. The rising global population, continuous reduction in cultivated land and several other factors have created pressure to look at the varieties which can fulfil the present and future demand of the food in the world. Hybrid rice has played a very important role for food security, and employment in China for many years and can create the same impact in India as well as other rice growing countries. Hybrid rice is bred for several resistance genes and can also tolerate other stress condition more efficiently than several inbred rice varieties. In the field of hybrid rice production, the two-line hybrid rice breeding can become a milestone to fulfil the present and future demand of food requirement and food security.
