Seaweed Mediated Biosynthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Gracilaria fergusonii J.Ag. Collected From Hare Island, Thoothukudi in the South East Coast of Tamil Nadu, India

Abstract


In the present study silver nanoparticles were synthesized using the aqueous extract of red seaweed Gracilaria fergusonii J.Ag. as the reducing agent. The formation of silver nanoparticles was confirmed by colour change from light yellow to dark brownish red, UV– visible spectroscopy, FT-IR, X-ray diffraction method (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis spectroscopy (EDS). The anoparticles showed an absorbance at 442 nm on UV–visible spectroscopy. The presence of proteins was identified by Fourier transform-infra red spectroscopy (FT-IR). The presence of elemental silver was characterized by X-ray diffraction method (XRD). The experimental results indicated that the reaction product was composed of high purity silver nanoparticles and the diameter of prepared silver nanoparticles was about 18–45 nm. These results not only provide a green approach for the synthesis of nanoparticles but also open a door for new pharmaceutical production.
