Abstract

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Episiotomy is defined as a deliberate incision commonly practiced during second stage of labour given on perineum to avoid perineal tear or to facilitate easy and safe vaginal delivery. Because of rigid perineum specially primigravida needs episiotomy and sometimes multigravida also require episiotomy to avoid perineal tear. As this perineal wound is very painful and difficult to heal because of frequent soiling by the lochia discharges and faecal matter. Thus, it requires proper intervention. In modern medicine antibiotic and healing ointment is widely used for episiotomy wound dressing. In Ayurveda various drugs are mentioned for external application and internal administration in context of Vrana. Dhoopan Karma is also advised in Shastiupkarmas of vrana and in Sutikaparicharya. Aim and Objectives: To compare the efficacy of Samangaadi Malhara and Dhoopan Karma with betadine ointment and dry heat on episiotomy wound healing. Material and Method: The clinical study was done on 50 patients who had gone through episiotomy and allocated into two groups by random sampling method, 25 patients were treated with Samangaadi Malhara and Dhoopan Karma (Group I Trial Group) and 25 patients were treated with Betadine ointment and dry heat (Group II Standard Group). Result: The result was assessed based on REEDA Scale for episiotomy wound healing and VAS Scale for pain assessment and analyzed statistically by using paired t-test. Both the groups showed significant result. No adverse reaction was documented. Conclusion: Trial Group I revealed comparatively better results than Group II over criteria of assessment.
