High-Performance Thin-Layer Chirography Detection of Ethambutol

A.K. Jaiswal, Sneha Yadav, Prafull Kumar

Abstract

Ethambutol belongs to the class of organic compounds known as 1, 2 amino alcohols. Being a medication, it is primarily used to treat tuberculosis. Its route of administration is oral. It is readily absorbed by gastrointestinal tract and 50% excreted unchanged by urine. Capacity of protein binding is 20–30%. It is antitubercular agent i.e. inhibiting the synthesis of spermidine in myobacteria also inhibits the transfer of mycolic acids into cell wall of tubercle bacillus. Ethambutol has sensitivity towards various strains like M. tuberculosis and M. kansasii. Being a powerful chemotherapeutic agent, it is specifically effective against actively growing microorganism of mycobacterium and tuberculosis. For its analysis various techniques such as GC, LC-MS, and thin-layer chromatography are reported in literature. Presently, the study was undertaken to develop an alternative sensitive method for detection of ethambutol on HPTLC plate. Ninhydrin reagent and iodine fume as reagent for its detection in thin layer chromatography.
