Parenting Style, Birth Order and Emotional-Behavioral Disorders in Children and Adolescents

Teodora Stoycheva Stoeva

Abstract

The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between parenting style and the presence of emotional and behavioral disorders such as anxiety, depression and aggression in childhood and adolescence, according to the birth order in the family. A total of 303 children (aged 9-10 years) and adolescents (aged 14-16 years) and their parents formed the research sample. It was assumed that the authoritarian style of the parent would be pathogenic with regard to the occurrence of emotional and behavioral disorders in children and adolescents both -in the firstborns (due to the increased demands of the parent in this position) and last born (due to the inability of the child to be realized against the background of the firstborn). The hypothesis was partially confirmed as the results showed the presence of depression in boys who are the last child in the family when applying authoritarian parenting style. Overprotective style has been found to be associated with anxiety in adolescents who are the first child in the family. The results are discussed in terms of their implication for the parenting counseling.
