Altitudinal Differences of Soil Microbial Biomass Carbon and Nitrogen and Soil Respiration in Two Broad Leaved Forest Ecosystems of Meghalaya, North-East India

Ruth Laldinthar, M. S. Dkhar

Abstract

Soil microbial biomass C, N and soil respiration were studied in two broad leaved forest ecosystems of Meghalaya, North-east India differing in altitudes. The values of microbial biomass C, N and soil respiration were higher at the high-altitude forest than that at the low altitude forest. Significant positive correlations with soil characteristics were also observed. It can be concluded that microbial biomass C, N and soil respiration is highly influenced by altitudinal differences and soil characteristics.
