Potential Role of miRNA in Oncogenesis

Akanksha Marwah

Abstract

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) refer to a group of small non-coding RNAs that are ~22 nt in length. They alter the gene expression by negatively regulating the expression of genes involved in cell development, proliferation and apoptosis in various eukaryotes, at the post-transcriptional level miRNAs are also being designated as oncogenic miRNAs (oncomiRs) as their dysregulation is being linked to cancer initiation and progression, indicating their roles as either tumor suppressor genes or oncogenes. The dysregulation in the function of miRNAs involved in apoptosis can lead to cancer development and resistance to cancer therapy. In this review, the biosynthesis of miRNA, the mechanisms of miRNA target regulation and the involvement of miRNAs in the initiation and progression of human cancer has been discussed.
