Abstract

Habb-e-Shifa is a compound herbal formulation of Unani system of medicine claims to be useful in the patients addicted to opium and helps to improve the withdrawal syndrome. The study was carried out in male Swiss mice weighing 20–30 g. All the animals were divided into five groups of six animals in each and induced with administration of morphine s.c. for four days. Group I served as negative control (NC) and treated with 1 ml normal saline with morphine, Group II (HS A) and Group III (HS B) treated with Habb-e-Shifa extract (50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg) on the day of four and Group IV (HS CA) and V (HS CB) treated with same dose daily twice concurrently with morphine. All the animals were received the last dose of Habb-e-Shifa extract with morphine two hours before naloxone injection on day four and were assessed for number of jumping in cylindrical jar immediately after the injection of naloxone over a period of 30 minutes. It was found that mean number of jumping in HS A, HS B, HS CA and HS CB was significantly decreased (p<0.05). All the groups of animals were compared with NC. Test drug Habb-e-Shifa produced significant degree of effect on morphine withdrawal syndrome and thus validated the Unani Medicine claim that Habb-e-Shifa is an important drug to be useful in the management of opioid withdrawal.
