Abstract

Background and Objective: The present study was undertaken to examine the attenuative effect of Caralluma diffusa methanolic extract against high-fat diet (HFD) induced hyperlipidemic/obesity in the liver of rats. Materials and Methods: The rats were divided in to five groups of each containing six rats. The Group I: served as normal control; Group II: served as high-fat diet (50 mg/kg body weight); Group III served as high-fat diet + 100 mg of C. diffusa; Group IV: served as high-fat diet + 200 mg of C. diffusa; Group V: served as high-fat diet + 10 mg/kg body weight of standard Atrovastin were orally administrated for 30 days. Results: Rats fed with HFD significantly (P<0.05) elevate the levels of body weight, altered haematological parameters, hepatic serum markers and glucose in rats. The hyperlipidemic activity was further evidenced by a significant (P<0.05) elevated levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) with significant (P<0.05) decreased level of high density lipoprotein (HDL) in serum of obesity induced rats. The histology of liver tissue also revealed the impact of HFD treated rats. Oral administration of C. diffusa (100 mg and 200 mg/kg body weight) to HFD rats significantly (P<0.05) recuperated the distorted biochemical indices, lipid profiles and pathological changes in the liver tissue. Conclusion: Thus, the results of the present study clearly demonstrate that C. diffusa has strong antioxidant and anti-hyperlipidemic properties that protect against HFD induced obesity in albino Wistar rats.
