Wound Healing Potential of Papain Enriched Nanostructured Lipid Carriers (NLCs) Incorporated in Topical Gels
Abstract
Objective: To explore the wound healing potential of topical gel enriched with papain NLCs. Methods: The papain loaded NLCs were prepared by hot homogenization method adopting 23 factorial designs. An optimized batch was reformulated from the 3D counterplot. The optimized batch of NLCs was loaded in 2.5% w/v Carbopol 934 gels. The wound healing activity of the gel was performed in Adult male Wister rats. Excision wounds were used for the study of the rate of contraction of wound and epithelization. A histopathology study was performed to understand the skin formation for epidermal and dermal remodelling in all the study groups. Results: The gradual wound healing in the animals and an absence of an infection at the wound site in any group of animals and a better wound healing was observed in the groups 3 and 5 as compared to the control group and other groups. The histopathological observation of tissues indicates, group 3 (i.e. 2% Papain loaded NLCs gel) exhibited wound healing, re-epithelialization, and neo-vascularization. The infiltration of inflammatory cells beneath the wound was reduced noticeably. Conclusion: The results support papain loaded NLCs have an excellent potential of topical wound healing.
