Optimization of Conditions for Alcohol Production from Alternate Resources

Pooja Kumari

Abstract

The purpose of this study is optimization of conditions for alcohol production from alternate sources. The study involves selection of known plant substrate to produce alcohol and further calculating total alcohol content. The substrates selected were Hibiscus leaves and sorghum grains and flour. The sugar estimation by Anthrone reagent is performed which concluded that sorghum has high sugar content than Hibiscus leaves. The final substrate selected is sorghum. Fermentation is carried out at different substrate concentrations that are 5%, 10%, 12% which were kept at pH of 6.3 and our inoculum of Sachromyces cerevsiae was added and kept at temperatures 34, 38, 42°C for 2 days for fermentation. The alcohol estimation is further done using standard alcohol. The maximum alcohol content is 13.67% v/v. The significance of this study is that such biofuels can be prepared easily and can be used for cooking, biogas plants, etc.
