Why genomes? The Loche (Cucurbita moschata Duchesne) case in Peru

Abstract

South America is a territory of high biodiversity with biotechnological potential. However, most of the countries are emerging economics with scientific communities not well established in their field with exception of Brazil, Chile and Argentina which possess specialized scientific communities. In the case of Peru, the context differs with a small number of qualified scientists and the lack of science as a carrier so far has not allow the emerging of strongly established scientific fields. A specialized National Laboratory focused in studying genomes and later biotechnological and/ or structural interventions to the metabolism will train a new generation of scientists in at least five scientific disciplines: biochemistry, molecular biology, bioinformatics, biotechnology and structural biology, such an objective should be pursued by the scientific community of any emerging economy.
